Royal Thunder (Atlanta, Ga)
http://www.royalthunderofficial.com/

Rising out of Atlanta, Georgia, Royal Thunder have been conjuring stoner rock grooves out of the Southern heat since they were formed in 2006 by guitarist Josh Weaver. Featuring singer and bassist Mlny Parsonz, drummer Lee Smith, and guitarist Josh Coleman, the band's hazy psychedelic sound evokes the early days of stoner and space rock, with Parsonz's soulful vocals bringing an element of dark drama to the band's swaggering sound. Royal Thunder made their recorded debut in 2009 with a self-titled EP, which the band self-released before signing to Relapse shortly thereafter, and the label re-released the album the following year. Their first full-length, CVI, arrived in 2012, followed in 2015 by a sophomore outing, Crooked Doors. Royal Thunder returned in 2017 with Wick, their most ambitious album to date. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi

Spirit Adrift (Phoenix, AZ)

"Since 2015, Nate Garrett has been at the helm of the traditional heavy metal force, Spirit Adrift, and a member of the death metal quintet, Gatecreeper. The former has been a conduit for his own catharsis—a means for a release of the emotions surrounding his past vices, views of the present society, and his own personal growth. His passion project continues to evolve — turning from Sabbathian doom to outright arena-filling heavy metal. Consequently, it has put Spirit Adrift at the crest of a wave of nostalgic metal that has swelled in the past couple years — his newest album, Divided By Darkness, is the crescendo. <![CDATA[Live and Loud Presents: The Suspects, The Inverters, Ryan Scroggins, Los Wasted Tones]]> https://rudyardspub.tunestub.com/show.cfm?id=297586&cart&buy

The Suspects (Houston, TX)
http://thesuspects.com/

The Suspects are experimenters, purveyors, and enthusiasts. No one else attempts the things that The Suspects accomplish with mixing ska, rock, reggae, and dub. For more than twenty years, The Suspects many members have blended all the musical things that they love in a huge, Houston-sized pot. The briny results of this effort are not easily named; is it strictly ska? Is it regular old reggae? Or, is it something new that you’ve never heard before? It doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as it makes you happy.

Charlie Esparza and Bill Grady found each other in early 1993 through the bulletin board at the old Westheimer location of Houston’s Sound Exchange records. The other members of the band were found slowly but surely: Alan Hernandez worked with Bill, and Joe Cote had been Bill’s co-worker at a previous job. Andy HockerClaudio DePujadas, and Chris Kendrick all answered fliers posted at Sound Exchange. Thomas Escalante was originally a partner in the record label that released the first two Suspects singles, plus he worked with Bill and Alan at the same time.Ryan Gabbart was barely old enough to drive when he joined the band. Steve Ruth had been a long-time fan of The Suspects when he heard Bill jokingly ask a Fitzgerald’s crowd if, “anybody knew any horn players”. Jason Davis and Jay Brooks were both good friends and members of Middlefinger.

Over nine years, we released four cds, toured the mid-west, and made a lot of friends. The Suspects played their “last show” on Friday August 23rd, 2002 at Fitzgeralds with Middlefinger, Magnetic IV, and Next2Nothing.

Even though most people thought it would never happen, The Suspects played two reunion shows after their breakup: January 19, 2007 and December 23, 2007… both at the Continental Club in Houston, Texas. After thinking about it for a few months, The Suspects decided you can’t ignore a good thing and announced their return to a full-time schedule in the summer of 2008. Thomas Escalante elected to leave the band in January 2015, and original singer Chris Kendrick was asked to rejoin in March.

The Inverters (Austin, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pg/theinverters/

The Inverters have been around since 2011. Making a name for themselves by combining influences from underground music ranging from reggae to two tone ska and punk rock and then some. To invert something is to upset it. Change it. Go against the norm and flip it around. With original diehards Al Shire and Mike L. Smith at the helm, The Inverters message is simple. Life experiences make for the anthems. Unity + Tolerance

https://funeralhorse.com/

Internationally known Anti-Sludge Garage Metal power-trio from Houston, Texas.

Highly influenced by artist like The Who, Melvins, and Black Flag – Funeral Horse is a staple for those who enjoy high-octane tracks. Their highly anticipated fourth LP release ‘Psalms For The Mourning’ was released last June on Artificial Head Records. The album is described as an evolution of the sound Funeral Horse is known for; without sacrificing any of the aggression, surprise, or intensity fans have come to expect.

Funeral Horse is currently booking their 2019 summer tour while working on new music, & other creations to follow the release of their most recent album, ‘Psalms For The Mourning.”

Ju4n (Austin, TX)

Superb mastery of analog sequencing is the hallmark of Austin based solo artist Juan Cisneros, aka JU4N, who has been a vital staple of the local synth scene for many years. Originally known as VC Childkraft, JU4N’s ambient crystalline sound design creates a sensation of mind/body separation, effectively lulling the listener out any sense of time and space. Cisneros’ programming and restorative tones become conduits for heightened electro-psychic hygiene, as future-scaped washes of tranquil synth patches and samples serve as a serene mental hiatus. JU4N’s music is fragile yet evocative, with an undeniable shimmer of nostalgia that is equally comforting and endearing

Curved Light (Austin, TX)

"The crown jewel of the always reliable ambient label Constellation Tatsu’s new batch of tapes (all worth checking on their own merit, by the way) is this new collection of polychromatic compositions by the synthesist Curved Light. Most of the pieces on Flow and Return are pretty short, but the sequences are colorful and detailed, offering plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. You can get lost in the shimmer—even on short interludes like 'Glacial Float'—which makes it a suitable soundtrack for any inner travels you have planned in the near future. Listen close, then drift away." - Noisey/VICE

The American Revival (Austin, TX)
https://www.theamericanrevival.net

The American Revival came into this world as the backing band for Brandon Callies, but it soon grew wings of it's own once the members began writing outside of the singer/songwriter genre. There is and aggressive undertone to this group's style of rock n roll both musically and lyrically. The band believes in its moniker, as they feel their name is more than just branding. The band aims to revive the rock and roll genre by infusing their deep Texas roots, their love of rock and roll, and marrying all parts of American music to create anthemic, vocal rock and roll.

<![CDATA[Steve Hofstetter]]> https://rudyardspub.tunestub.com/show.cfm?id=301031&cart&buy

Steve Hofstetter (Los Angeles, CA)
http://www.stevehofstetter.com

Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter is often called the hardest working man in show-business. With all due respect to the late James Brown.

Hofstetter's national TV debut came on ESPN's Quite Frankly, where Stephen A. Smith yelled at him for three minutes. Hofstetter has also appeared on CBS' "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood", VH1's "Countdown", Sundance's "On the Road in America", and ABC's "Barbara Walter's Special", where he thankfully did not cry. He is the host and executive producer of "Laughs" on Fox networks, where he only cries occasionally.

One of the top booked acts on the college circuit, the original writer for collegehumor.com has also released six albums. Hofstetter has written humor columns for the New York Times, SportsIllustrated.com, and NHL.com, where he publicly admitted to being a Ranger fan.

After hosting Four Quotas on Sirius Satellite Radio for two seasons, Hofstetter moved to broadcast radio, and his Sports Minute (Or So) was syndicated on over 170 stations and in over 30 newspapers. Hofstetter's second live comedy album ("Cure For the Cable Guy") reached #20 on Billboard's comedy charts. His third album ("Dark Side of the Room") was the first ever pay-what-you-want" comedy album, since people were going to steal it anyway. His fourth album consisted of an hour of 100% ad-libbed material, which is, frankly, nuts. And his fifth album hit #1 on iTunes' comedy charts, which is also a bit nuts.

Hofstetter's brutal tour schedule consists of over 100 colleges and dozens of clubs every year, and is fueled by an immense online popularity, tons of press, and a Prius with great gas mileage. He reached 200,000 friends on Facebook and 400,000 more on MySpace, and high shelves in grocery stores.

While Hofstetter's live shows are routinely sold out, he is best known for his writing, first published at age 15, mainly to impress girls. At 18, he co-founded "Sports Jerk of the Week", an irreverent website featured by press like USA Today's Baseball Weekly, Sports Illustrated and CNN. And at 20, Hofstetter took a year off of school to head up web content for the New York Yankees. The Yankees won the World Series that year, which would have been wonderful if they hadn't beaten Hofstetter's Mets. Yes, he's also a Mets fan. Poor kid.

While an undergraduate at Columbia University, Hofstetter was a well-read columnist for the Columbia Daily Spectator and a voice of the Lions. After a summer writing for Maxim, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated for Kids, Hofstetter syndicated his column in several newspapers.

Without his glasses, Hofstetter also looks a great deal like Michael Rappaport.

Doomstress (Houston, TX)
https://doomstress.bandcamp.com/

In March of 2016, burning passion, relentless drive, and an undying love for heavy metal music is what fueled bassist/lead vocalist Doomstress Alexis to bring to life the powerful entity that is Doomstress. In May of 2016, Doomstress arose before the people with Supernatural Kvlt Sounds, an EP of material rooted in doom, NWOBHM, and occult rock with influences such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Cathedral, and Uriah Heap. These influences can be easily identified in Doomstress’ heavy grooves, layered twin guitars, strong melodic vocals, and a thunderous yet dynamic rhythm section.

When asked what inspires her lyrics, Doomstress Alexis said, “Honestly, real world news makes for good doom music.” Finding inspiration in current events, personal experiences, and at times even social and political commentary, Doomstress creates songs that, opposed to being preachy, are engaging. “While the personal experiences come through in the songs, it’s easy for the listener to find themselves in these songs and to make that connection.”

Formed in '02, we have been crushing the world with our raging riffs, our enlightening lyrics, and our unquestioned sexual prowess ever since. No scene, city, club, house, or woman can handle the raw, destructive intensity that is PRIDE KILLS. Despite member changes, working offshore, families, huge quantities of booze and drugs, a lack of musical ability, and massive amounts of kicking eachother's asses, we still continue to be a force to reckon with. If you have yet to get penetrated with the ravaging force of PRIDE KILLS, then there remains a hole in your loins where we belong. So, open your hearts and spread your legs, cause PRIDE KILLS is here to rape your souls and break everything we fucking see. EAT SHIT.

The Cops (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/THe-Cops-1176247895781584/

There was a time when punk music didn’t make a statement, but it was more fun and politically incorrect. Acts like NoFX did kind of whatever they wanted while still dropping some quality punk records without apologizing for the sentiments expressed within their songs. Part of the aesthetic to punk music is to buck whatever the mainstream does, so it should come as no surprise that there’s a new punk band who is far from politically correct. Houston’s The Cops, featuring members of Talk Sick Brats, dress like police officers and sing songs from the cop’s point of view. Like the way KISS put on makeup and became the characters they portrayed, this four-piece dons police attire and become characters singing what you’d expect a cop to sing about. This year they dropped four singles that are tongue in cheek and far from serious, but they’re also some pretty solid punk jams that are catchy and hard to ignore. - David Garrick, FPH

Pong (Austin, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/Pong-470512675233/

Mention the word “pong” in Austin, and odds are responses will range more to the dance spectrum than the early video-game world. Emerging from the ashes of Ed Hall in the late Nineties, guitarist Gary Chester, drummer Lyman Hardy, and bassist Larry Strub formed Pong with guitarist Jason Craig and keyboardist Shane Shelton. Together they became a mighty “retro-futuristic” fusion of melody, beat, lights, and vocal effects. Talk boxes and rows of keyboards replace Ed Hall’s post-punk guitar pulls, and dance floors began to give under the weight of ass-shaking punk rockers. It’s that mix of punk, post-punk, electronics, hip-hop, and humor that makes Pong so much fun. 2001 found Pong finally releasing debut Killer Lifestyle, chock-full of local shout-outs, creepy synth beats, and the “Blues Underground.” 2005’sBubble City gathered hits like “Finally, Some Good Music” and “Interpol” into a dance party on disc. – Darcie Stevens, Austin Chronicle

The Schizophonics (San Diego, CA)
https://schizophonics.com/

The Schizophonics are, in one word, EXPLOSIVE. Their frenzied live performances tap into the same unstoppable combination of rock ‘n’ roll energy and showmanship that fueled the MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom. When they hit the stage, they grab your attention and don’t let go. They’ve built up a formidable reputation in their home base of San Diego and a fervent following among locals. “One of my favorite live bands ever!” proclaims Tim Mays, who has run the Casbah for over 25 years and seen literally thousands of live bands come through his doors in that time. “The Schizophonics bring the goods every time they play,” he enthuses. “Pat Beers is like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and James Brown – yelping, wailing, shralping the guitar with his left hand while gyrating all over the place; Kyle joins in the mayhem on bass and Lety keeps it real behind the kit.”

But the Schizophonics are more than just an outstanding live act, they’re also committed to writing great, memorable songs, a skill singer/guitarist Pat Beers has continued to hone, channeling such influences as Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Sonics, the Stooges, the MC5, James Brown, and Little Richard.

Pat and drummer Lety Beers first met in Casa Grande, Arizona, before pulling up stakes and moving to San Diego in 2008. They formed the Schizophonics the following year, and have worked tirelessly since then, playing literally hundreds of live shows up and down the West Coast, and further afield. A 2013 tour of Spain with El Vez – who had recruited them as his backing group – resulted in the group’s first record release, a three-song 7” EP on the Munster label. In December 2014 they took their act to an arena-sized venue for 91X’s Wrex the Halls concert, on a bill that also included Billy Idol, Spoon, Cage the Elephant, and Interpol. Afterwards 91X program director Mike Halloran declared them, “The most exciting band I have seen in many, many years. They must be seen to be believed.”

In July 2015 the Schizophonics’ second single, “Put Your Weight On It” b/w “Red Planet,” was released on the Ugly Things label. This summer they started work on their debut album at Earthling Studios with producer Mike Kamoo. Their future plans also include a European tour in September and October, this time taking in Spain, Italy, France and England. - Mike Stax, Ugly Things Magazine
