Skating Polly (Tacoma, WA)
https://www.skatingpolly.com

Skating Polly, a sister duo from Oklahoma made up of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, formed in 2009 after a jam session at the girls’ Halloween party. Their sophomore album, Lost Wonderfuls, was produced by Exene Cervenka of X and mixed by Kliph Scurlock of The Flaming Lips. Lost Wonderfuls was released in April, 2013. They are now working on their third album, Fuzz Steilacoom, set to be released early 2014. Fuzz Steilacoom was tracked by Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening.

Raised on ‘70s punk and early-‘90s alt-rock, Mayo (age 13) and Bighorse (18) mine inspiration from artists as disparate as Johnny Cash, The Ramones, NWA, Nirvana, and Bikini Kill and saturate their own songs with a raw energy reminiscent of their musical heroes. Skating Polly takes a minimalist approach to songwriting, with the two largely self-taught musicians (Bighorse plays guitar, Mayo plays a guitar/bass hybrid called a basitar, and both girls play drums and piano) crafting super-catchy melodies mainly by “messing around with our instruments and figuring out how to make cool noises,” according to Bighorse. But despite their stripped-down aesthetic, each track on Lost Wonderfuls retains a rich emotionalism that’s at turns brutally in-your-face, gut-wrenchingly tender, and irresistibly fun.

Along with earning the adoration of Cervenka (whom they befriended after attending one of the X singer’s 2010 solo shows and playing their demos on a cell phone), Skating Polly has found fans in Rosanne Cash and Sean Lennon, taken the stage with punk legends like Mike Watt, and opened up for such indie heavy-hitters as Deerhoof and Band of Horses. Tapping Mayo’s dad as their tour manager, the stepsisters typically hit the road with their entire family and optimize their travel time by making up songs on their ukulele.

Both Mayo and Bighorse are intent on ignoring what’s fashionable and staying true to their passion for challenging music with long-lasting appeal. “The musicians we’re most inspired by are the ones who keep on going and going, who devote their entire lives to coming up with new and different stuff,” says Mayo. “A lot of times at our shows people will come up to us and tell us, ‘Keep on doing what you’re doing, don’t ever stop’ and we’re just like, ‘Yeah—we weren’t planning on ever stopping.”

The Genzales (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/Thegenzales/

Taking their name (and inspiration) from Johnny Thunders’ birth surname, the Genzales formed in early 2017 with the idea of just writing some songs and playing ragged and energetic rock and roll: punk rock molded in the form of not only their namesake, but other miscreant rock and roll punk forebears as well like Loney-era Groovies, Real Kids, Nervous Eaters…the Lazy Cowgirls. Messy, noisy and never earnest, and always sullied by their roots, their songs always nod to the Kinks and the Pretty Things. Band members consist of remnants of Houston bands like the Born Liars, modfag and the Freakouts, as well as the B-Movie Rats from Los Angeles. New single for ‘Don’t Smoke in Bed’ on Raw Ramp Records coming soon.

Doomstress (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/DoomstressBand

In March of 2016, burning passion, relentless drive, and an undying love for heavy metal music is what fueled bassist/lead vocalist Doomstress Alexis to bring to life the powerful entity that is Doomstress. In May of 2016, Doomstress arose before the people with Supernatural Kvlt Sounds, an EP of material rooted in doom, NWOBHM, and occult rock with influences such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Cathedral, and Uriah Heap. These influences can be easily identified in Doomstress’ heavy grooves, layered twin guitars, strong melodic vocals, and a thunderous yet dynamic rhythm section.

When asked what inspires her lyrics, Doomstress Alexis said, “Honestly, real world news makes for good doom music.” Finding inspiration in current events, personal experiences, and at times even social and political commentary, Doomstress creates songs that, opposed to being preachy, are engaging. “While the personal experiences come through in the songs, it’s easy for the listener to find themselves in these songs and to make that connection.”

Empty Shells (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/emptyshellsband/

Formed in 2013 and led by the fiery guitar playing and emotive vocals of mercurial frontman Jonathan Espeche along with the pummeling rhythm section of Michael San Luis (bass) and Austin Hand (drums).

With a sound that encompasses the immediacy and aggressiveness of the early 1990's alternative movement, lead guitar heroics of the 1970's, as well the atmospheric sound of shoegaze; they have taken their influences and created a sound that is uniquely their own. Their dense wall of guitar and high energy live shows have garnered them comparisons to bands such as Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, Nirvana, and My Bloody Valentine.

They have been tapped to open shows locally for national acts such as Clinic, No Joy, Yuck, Antemasque, and are quickly establishing themselves as an up and coming band to watch.

The Beaumonts (Lubbock, TX)
http://thebeaumontstx.com/

There's something about Lubbock. Something other than the oppressive blue sky, the unavoidable cloud of shit-smell that occasionally engulfs the city, the flat, featureless landscape, or the preponderance of teen pregnancy, boredom, alcoholism, and God. There's music. Yes, indeed there is. The Hub City has spawned music like you wouldn't believe. Music loved by folks the world over. Even the real "King of Rock and Roll" came from Lubbock, and if you believe that (which you'd be a damn fool not to), then it ain't too much of a stretch to believe Lubbock is also home to the greatest country band that ever existed. That band is THE BEAUMONTS.

It wasn't too long ago that four of Lubbock's most loved veteran musicians decided the state of Texas country music was dismal at best, and horrifying at its worst. Somehow, over the last twenty years, it became acceptable for a group of frat-boys to show up in thrift-store AC/DC shirts, play half-ass Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes about drinking Lone Star and smoking weed, and call that "country." Well, good friends, THE BEAUMONTS didn't think that was "all that damn country" and decided to do something about it. What resulted was a juggernaut of essence, the trooest of troo cvntry, something akin to the creation of the universe, but with Telecasters. Behold, good friends, and delight in the majesty of THE BEAUMONTS!

<![CDATA[Pyreship, Omotai, Glassing, Searing Arrow]]> https://rudyardspub.tunestub.com/show.cfm?id=297590&cart&buy

Pyreship (Houston, TX)
https://pyreship.com/

Houston is most often noted for bland pop and indie. What is most often overlooked is it’s small but indelibly black-blooded metal scene. Informed equally by West Coast doom and post metal, Floridian death metal and Georgia sludge, it’s the unexpected scream at a hipster’s dinner party.

Houston sludge thugs PyreShip expertly blend post metal and doom with a raft of 90’s slowcore and noise rock influences. Comprised of four road-hardened musicians, PyreShip’s songs are reflective of their formative environment – stripped down, unpretentious, and resilient.

Live, the music is meant to be both heard and felt, with Steve Smith’s relentless jackhammer beats melding seamlessly with the molten slag spilling out of George Lusito’s bass amp. Co-guitarists Jason Jordan and Sam Waters stoke the bellows. PyreShip is one of the few remaining bands running an unapologetically monolithic backline. They use it to slam out slow, deliberate riffs that resonate long after the show has ended and the crowd dispersed.

Omotai (Houston, TX)
http://www.omotai.com/

Omotai is a rarity in the world of the heavy - a curious stylistic alloy, a band wielding the stoner metal truncheon with math rock deliberation. The apoplexy of each gnashing riff, conveyed live via a massive wall of amplification, is enough to bring flesh as well as the surrounding atmosphere to a target resonance, the audience appropriated as a biological component of the sonic transmission.

The Houston metal outfit was formed in December 2009 by Sam Waters (guitar, vocals) and Anthony Vallejo (drums, vocals). They recruited Melissa Lonchambon Ryan (bass guitar, vocals) a month later and hit the studio almost immediately to pump out their debut EP Peace Through Fear, taking cues from 80’s thrash, 90’s noise rock, grindcore and sludge. Their sophomore effort, Terrestrial Grief, distilled Peace’s strongest points, upping the math and whiplash quotients by several orders of magnitude.

Rapidly garnering a rep for punishingly loud live performances, with an emphasis on speed and aberrant rhythms, the trio toured the US between 2010 and 2012, sharpening their skills alongside Yob, the Sword, Big Business, Hammerhead and countless other bands. In 2013, after constant writing and the third release,Fresh Hell, looming, they took on guitarist/vocalist Jamie Ross. It’s proven a smart investment for the band, with Ross’s shred adding a new dimension to Ryan and Waters’ already pummeling wall of riffery.

Glassing (Austin, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/GlassingBand/

Cold sand on a barren coastline. Spectral blackness. Godless nights. The calmness of undisturbed water. The illusion of belonging. Death As A Gift. These are but a minute illustration of the vast array of themes and explorations deliberated upon by Austin, TX trio GLASSING on their sophomore opus Spotted Horse. Weaving together layers upon layers of dense textures, swirling blast beats and looming atmospheres, GLASSING excel at the art of organized chaos through sound. Across 10 songs and 44 minutes, GLASSING blend elements of black metal and post-hardcore with ambient explorations, dream-pop sensibilities and grinding walls of sound that defy categorization. Spotted Horse is, at its core, a construction of dynamic, beautifully unsettling soundscapes and nothingness unsurfaced.

Royal Thunder (Atlanta, Ga)
http://www.royalthunderofficial.com/

Rising out of Atlanta, Georgia, Royal Thunder have been conjuring stoner rock grooves out of the Southern heat since they were formed in 2006 by guitarist Josh Weaver. Featuring singer and bassist Mlny Parsonz, drummer Lee Smith, and guitarist Josh Coleman, the band's hazy psychedelic sound evokes the early days of stoner and space rock, with Parsonz's soulful vocals bringing an element of dark drama to the band's swaggering sound. Royal Thunder made their recorded debut in 2009 with a self-titled EP, which the band self-released before signing to Relapse shortly thereafter, and the label re-released the album the following year. Their first full-length, CVI, arrived in 2012, followed in 2015 by a sophomore outing, Crooked Doors. Royal Thunder returned in 2017 with Wick, their most ambitious album to date. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi

<![CDATA[Live and Loud Presents: The Suspects, The Inverters, Ryan Scroggins, Los Wasted Tones]]> https://rudyardspub.tunestub.com/show.cfm?id=297586&cart&buy

The Suspects (Houston, TX)
http://thesuspects.com/

The Suspects are experimenters, purveyors, and enthusiasts. No one else attempts the things that The Suspects accomplish with mixing ska, rock, reggae, and dub. For more than twenty years, The Suspects many members have blended all the musical things that they love in a huge, Houston-sized pot. The briny results of this effort are not easily named; is it strictly ska? Is it regular old reggae? Or, is it something new that you’ve never heard before? It doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as it makes you happy.

Charlie Esparza and Bill Grady found each other in early 1993 through the bulletin board at the old Westheimer location of Houston’s Sound Exchange records. The other members of the band were found slowly but surely: Alan Hernandez worked with Bill, and Joe Cote had been Bill’s co-worker at a previous job. Andy HockerClaudio DePujadas, and Chris Kendrick all answered fliers posted at Sound Exchange. Thomas Escalante was originally a partner in the record label that released the first two Suspects singles, plus he worked with Bill and Alan at the same time.Ryan Gabbart was barely old enough to drive when he joined the band. Steve Ruth had been a long-time fan of The Suspects when he heard Bill jokingly ask a Fitzgerald’s crowd if, “anybody knew any horn players”. Jason Davis and Jay Brooks were both good friends and members of Middlefinger.

Over nine years, we released four cds, toured the mid-west, and made a lot of friends. The Suspects played their “last show” on Friday August 23rd, 2002 at Fitzgeralds with Middlefinger, Magnetic IV, and Next2Nothing.

Even though most people thought it would never happen, The Suspects played two reunion shows after their breakup: January 19, 2007 and December 23, 2007… both at the Continental Club in Houston, Texas. After thinking about it for a few months, The Suspects decided you can’t ignore a good thing and announced their return to a full-time schedule in the summer of 2008. Thomas Escalante elected to leave the band in January 2015, and original singer Chris Kendrick was asked to rejoin in March.

The Inverters (Austin, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pg/theinverters/

The Inverters have been around since 2011. Making a name for themselves by combining influences from underground music ranging from reggae to two tone ska and punk rock and then some. To invert something is to upset it. Change it. Go against the norm and flip it around. With original diehards Al Shire and Mike L. Smith at the helm, The Inverters message is simple. Life experiences make for the anthems. Unity + Tolerance

Doomstress (Houston, TX)
https://doomstress.bandcamp.com/
