Simon Joyner (Jagjaguwar, Woodsist)

In the early 1990s, Beck listed Omaha, Neb., songwriter Simon Joyner in a personal top-10 list for Rolling Stone magazine. Famed British DJ John Peel, known for making careers for playing just one of a band's songs, played Joyner's fourth album in its entirety.

"Simon was among those early acts that influenced so many other people to see that someone from Omaha could record their own music, could do something that was uniquely in their own voice, that sounded like nothing else that was going on, could make some money off of it and could get some attention and national exposure," McMahan says.

One of those Omaha musicians influenced by Simon Joyner is Conor Oberst, the man behind the band Bright Eyes.

While some of the musicians he's influenced have gone on to make bigger names for themselves, Joyner says he's content with a family, a day job and the chance to let real life shape his storytelling.

Adam Ostrar (Austin, TX)

"The Worried Coat" LP out 4/5 on Super Secret Records- Recorded in part in Mexico City courtesy of Richard Davies (The Moles) hand-me-down studio time and the other half at a ranch in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, Ostrar wrapped and warped his Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar around these groovy nuggets of capitalistic despair, cretinism, gas lighting, nationalism and nativism.

Tom Carter (Charalmbides, Morning Scales the Mountain)

Tom Carter's electric guitar work weaves strands of melody, drone, fuzz, and charged silence into intricately detailedinstant compositions. Best known for his work with iconoclastic acid-folk improvisers Charalambides, Tom Carter currently focuses on solo performances and recordings. His Three Lobed 2LP Long Time Underground was selected as the number-one experimental album of 2015 by Pitchfork.
