Nzinga Kalilah

Nzinga Kalilah (born October 19th, 1993) is an American jazz, contemporary, R&B, saxophonist originally from the Philadelphia/New Jersey area.  Kalilah was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in in South New Jersey. She is a graduate of William Paterson’s jazz program where she has studied with jazz greats such as Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern, Vincent Herring, and Janet Reeves. After earning a Bachelor’s of Jazz Studies from WPUNJ, Kalilah attended the coveted 1 year intensive Berklee Global Institute under a full tuition grant. There she was mentored and taught by the great Danilo Perez and instructed by George Garzone, Terri Lyne Carrington, John Patitucci, and Dave Liebman just to name a few. She graduated this past summer with her Master’s from the program.  Kalilah has played with a number of renowned musicians including Time for Three, Duane Eubanks, Sam Reed, George Garzone, and Kenny Werner.  Also this past January with an ensemble coached by Danilo Perez she played alongside Terri Lynn Carington and George Garzone in the  2017 Panama Jazz Festival. Kalilah strives to make contemporary music relevant to her generation, propelling the youth led movement for justice and social change.  Her compositions,“All The Things Emmett Till Could Have Been,” “Reparations,” “Harriet Tubman’s Feet,” and “Polka Dotted Tragedy,” speak to her courage to be boldly creative.
