TOM ULICHNY graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts in 2005. As a multi-instrumentalist at Berklee, Ulichny studied guitar, drums, and world percussion under mentors such as Dave Tronzo, Jerry Leake, Dave DiCenso and Jamey Haddad. During his time at Berklee, he delved into the study of jazz and blues and discovered a passion for world music instruments and traditions, specifically Middle Eastern and Indian musical constructs. This led him to take a semester off and intensively study the tabla and Indian rhythmic systems under Rajeev Devasthali, an internationally regarded master of the Hindustani traditional instrument. After returning from India, Ulichny focused on the application of Indian instrumentation and rhythms and how to blend that with the westernized jazz and blues centered approaches of melodic and harmonic improvisation.
After graduating, Ulichny worked as an adjunct professor for the St. John School of the Arts in the U.S. Virgin Islands and was the Director of Music Education for Fell's Point Music in Baltimore, Maryland, where he developed curriculum for a West African drumming program at the Living Classrooms Charter School.
Ulichny now makes his home in midcoast Maine and has entered his fifth year of business as the founder and Executive Director of
Midcoast Music Academy, a community music school in Rockland, Maine with eight instructors and 120 students.
Ulichny has spent the last twelve years experimenting with a more contemporary application of the tabla, kanjira, djembe, frame drum, and ghatam. His passion for both percussion and stringed instruments led him to live looping, which allows him to record instantly while performing and build complex layers of world percussive rhythms within the framework of western melodic and harmonic patterns.
On October 1st 2015, Ulichny released his debut album, "Lately,” recorded at Anchour Studios, which emphasizes a natural analog sound that closely mimics the live experience. Drawing from influences as diverse as old school slide and fingerpicking blues, Americana, traditional Hindustani and Carnatic music, experimental folk singer Andrew Bird and Afropop artist Oliver Mtukudzi, Ulichny’s music is equal parts warm soul and audio science.
