Join us for a mesmerizing evening of Cuban music and culture with this exciting new talent on Brownswood Recordings direct from Havana !

“The biggest myth of the decades old Cuba/U.S. standoff is that it produced cultural isolation. One listen to Daymé Arocena’s voice and there is no doubt she heard as much Aretha as she heard Celia.”  (NPR)

Singer, composer, arranger, choir director, and band leader Daymé Arocena, at just 22 years young, is already a dynamic, charismatic presence in Cuban music. Her diverse musical talents have swiftly taken her into broader territories. Dressed always in white, she is visibly involved in the heart and spirit of the Afro-Cuban tradition of Santeria.

“Her voice pouring liquid over hectic conga beats before breaking out in soulful celebration of the storied perfect combination of Cuban music and jazz." (Billboard)

In May 2014, a group of emerging electronic artists traveled to Havana with BBC 6 radio host and cultural ambassador Gilles Peterson to produce original tracks with Cuban musicians for a new album in the Havana Cultura series. To acquaint them with the voices that they could work with, the producers attended an open mic session where after a few acts into the evenings, a barefoot, white-clad Daymé took the stage and stole the show. “She’s a total knock-out,” says Gilles Peterson. “She could have done that performance on any radio station or TV show in the world!”

With a wonderfully light-hearted, amusing charm, Daymé emits laughter from within a song with a voice as versatile and changeable as a bird’s in different seasons. Her expressive descriptions of her life and love are perfect examples of her range of textures from the rhythmic traditions of her upbringing in rumba, to today’s neo soul, jazz and dance music.

Since the release of her 2015 debut album ‘Nueva Era’ on Brownswood, Daymé is fast gaining a worldwide reputation for her exceptional live shows. Come experience this exciting new talent for yourselves and hear why NPR selected Dayme’s debut as one of the best 50 albums of the year !
