Madeline Tasquin

Canadian-Californian songwriter Madeline Tasquin was raised in Northern British Columbia by her opera singer mother and Austrian gold-miner father. She learned to play the piano as soon as she could reach the keys, and in 2011 she picked up a concert ukulele, finding it to be “much easier to carry around than a piano." In 2014 she rediscovered the guitar, "two more strings than a ukulele," and now plays a weekly gig with gypsy jazz guitarist George Cole. Madeline's next conquest is the clarinet, abandoned in grade school but never forgotten. Singing with her mother and two younger sisters for hours on long car trips from the country to the city as a kid honed a keen ear for harmony, and then in her teenage years, Primus and Mr.Bungle played alongside Rachmaninoff, Satie and Chopin. Madeline returned to her musical roots in 2006 when she arrived in the Bay Area, after earning a degree in Architecture in Sydney Australia. Singing in both English and French, her songs dip from jazz-tinged folk to odd-meter soul, to twisted pop ballad and delicately dark fairy-tale. Her multi-instrumentalism, multi-lingualism and accessibly edgy compositions are complemented by a stage presence that is disarming and personable. Interacting playfully and naturally with the audience is as much a part of her act as is the music. Madeline's first full length album, an adventurous collaboration with producer-composers Dan Cantrell (Tom Waits, Joanna Newsom) and Daniel Wright (Song Preservation Society, Totonoko), hatches in Spring 2015.
