Brass Magic

Brass Magic began in 2010 when Danny Lubin-Laden wrote a bunch of songs for horns in a cottage in El Cerrito. Naming the project Horny, he brought together Bay Area musicians to perform the music at house parties for friends. He then brought the music to Brooklyn, calling former classmates from The New School For Jazz to play shows around New York City. After playing around the city and gaining confidence, the band moved west once again, taking root in Oakland as Brass Magic. As the band solidified, other band members began bringing in their own songs, making the band a truly collaborative effort, an evolving meld of genres and influences.
Seeing Brass Magic set up on a street corner (which they can do, as their music is unplugged, powered by breath), one might expect a New Orleans brass band sound. Though the instrumentation holds true, Brass Magic infuses their sound with hip-hop, rock, world, soul, electronic, and pretty much anything they hear and like.  The horns sometimes stand in for synthesizers or effects. The versatile ability of the musicians creates a full and modern sound. Aptly put by Madeleine Key in The East Bay Express: “Brass Magic doesn't make toe-tapping music: It makes life-affirming, groovy party music.”
